Alzheimer’s Association Reaching Out to Hispanic Community

The Alzheimer’s Association Southeast Florida Chapter and the National Alzheimer’s Association Chapter are working together to interview and film Spanish-speaking caregivers and persons with Alzheimer’s of Cuban or Puerto Rican descent. They are looking for these specific nationalities, as other chapters across the nation have also participated to involve Spanish-speakers of different nationalities. The project will be a filmed interview in Spanish discussing each person’s experience with the disease.

Binaytara Foundation Launches Telemedicine to Improve Healthcare in Nepal

Binaytara Foundation (BTF) launches telemedicine between physicians in USA and those in Manipal College of Medical Sciences, Pokhara, Nepal to help improve patient care and promote evidence-based medicine in Nepal. Telemedicine involves the use of broadband technology that provides real-time high speed access for the transfer of medical imaging, video, data and voice. The technology also enables e-learning and training through video consultation. Expert physicians from the USA have volunteered for this project.

Prostate Cancer Foundation Funds Grants to Support Innovation

The Prostate Cancer Foundation (PCF) today announced the funding of 21 new Young Investigator Awards at 17 leading cancer centers in the U.S. and Canada. Designed to encourage the most innovative minds in cancer research to focus their careers on prostate cancer, the awards provide recipients with three years of funding to test transformational research questions for prostate cancer patients. The 2010 Young Investigator Awards represent a new $4.5 million investment in the global cancer research community by PCF.

World Health Care Congress

iPad App Helps Autistic Teen Communicate

One of the first apps developed for Apple’s new iPad is a tool to help autistic people communicate. Called iMeanTM, it turns the entire iPad screen into a large-button keyboard, with text display and word prediction. It allows people who are speech-challenged to communicate their needs and ideas directly, distinctly and independently.

Xanga.com has launched Autisable.com – where people can create their own blogs and share their own journey dealing with Autism.
Marc Ginsburg, President of Xanga said, “We’ve seen countless communities of support form around people who share their struggles on Xanga. And we wanted to provide a similar service specifically for people tackling the challenges of Autism.”
