The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) will address concerns for child and adolescent mental health at the 2010 NAMI National Convention in Washington, D.C, July 1-3.

The 2010 NAMI Convention also will honor journalist Judith Warner with an award for the book, We’ve Got Issues: Children and Parents in the Age of Medication, which explores difficult decisions parents face in finding help for children who “suffer enormously” from mental illness.

Only one in five children who has a diagnosable mental illness receives treatment, yet children who receive earlier treatment interventions have better outcomes.

On June 1, an American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) mental health task force called for pediatricians to perform mental health screenings for children at each doctor visit. The AAP also underscored a need for more child psychiatrists and mental health professionals in communities—to overcome critical shortages.

NAMI maintains a Child & Adolescent Action Center that focuses on child and adolescent mental health..

The 2010 NAMI Convention full schedule offers many symposia and presentations, including:

Friday, July 2

•	Financing and Expanding Children’s Mental Health Services (10:45 a.m.)

Despite state budget crises, state governments and local communities can invest in a full array of mental health services, including home and community-based services for children.

•	Crisis Intervention in Schools (3:45 pm.)

Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) can help schools, mental health providers, police and the juvenile justice system provide safer, more effective help to youth experiencing psychiatric crises.

•	Understanding and Treating Kids’ Behavior Challenges (7:30 p.m.)

Ross Greene, Ph.D., author of The Explosive Child, will discuss “why challenging kids are challenging,” child behavior as development delays and how caregivers improve relations and communications through collaborative problem-solving.

Saturday, July 3

•	StrengthofUs: A Social Networking Community for Young Adults (8:45 a.m.)

Learn about StrengthofUs.org, NAMI’s new online resource center and social networking website for young adults working to overcome mental health issues.

•	“Ask the Doctor Session” on Children and Adolescents (3:15 pm.) with Michael Houston, M.D.

About NAMI

More than 2,400 participants in AIDS/LifeCycle arrived at the Veterans Center in Los Angeles today after traveling 545 miles from San Francisco over the past seven days in the world’s largest annual HIV/AIDS fundraising event. In its ninth year, the event raised $10 million to support the services of San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center that prevent new HIV infections and care for those living with HIV/AIDS.

The cycling event was such as success that a record number of participants?1,200?have already signed up for next year’s AIDS/LifeCycle, which will mark the 10th anniversary of the event and 30 years since the first cases of AIDS were discovered.

“The participants on this ride and their generous donors have inspired us all to fight harder than ever in our quest to end AIDS,” said Barbara Kimport, interim CEO of San Francisco AIDS Foundation and one of the cyclists. “Their extraordinary efforts have spread awareness that HIV and AIDS continues to affect so many lives. Together, we will bring an end to this disease through bold public policy work and innovative programs that stop the spread of HIV.”

The 1,925 cyclists and 500 volunteer “roadies,” ranging in age form 18 to 82 and hailing from nearly every state and eight countries, were united in a commitment to end HIV and caring for those living with the virus. Cyclists raised an average of $5,000 each this year. Since its inception in 2002, AIDS/LifeCycle has raised $70 million to support HIV/AIDS services. In the seven days it took to ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, more than 1,000 people in the United States and 50,000 people around the world were infected with HIV.

“I want to thank the riders and roadies for their remarkable passion and unfailing dedication,” Center CEO Lorri L. Jean said at the AIDS/LifeCycle closing ceremony. “Because of you, thousands of people with HIV and AIDS will be able to come to the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center and San Francisco AIDS Foundation and get the medical care and other help they desperately need. Because of all that you have done, literally thousands of lives will be saved.”

AIDS/LifeCycle is a fully supported, 545-mile bike ride?not a race?that supports the HIV/AIDS services provided by the Center and the Foundation. It also raises awareness that HIV/AIDS is a growing scourge that continues to have a devastating impact on our communities, especially in California. More than 1 in 10 of the nation’s HIV-positive people live in California, and California ranks second among the states in cumulative AIDS cases.

There are 1.1 million Americans living with HIV?the highest number in the history of the epidemic. Gay and bisexual men bear the brunt of the disease, representing 76 percent of all HIV cases in California and 53 percent nationally. Communities of color are also disproportionately affected; although African Americans comprise 6 percent of the state’s population, they account for 19 percent of those living with HIV/AIDS. Teens and young adults between the ages of 13 and 29 account for more than one-third of all new infections in the United States, the largest share of any age group.

June 15th is the 5th annual Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Organizations and communities across the world will be engaging in activities which will raise awareness of this serious problem affecting elderly citizens worldwide. The law firm of Cullan & Cullan, M.D., J.D. encourages you to participate in local events to help promote elder abuse awareness in the Phoenix community.

Elder Abuse Awareness Day was started in 2006. In its initial year, several hundred organizations and government entities participated in activities intended to help promote a better understanding of the issues surrounding elderly abuse in nursing homes around the world. Participation in the event has grown considerably each year.

Nursing home abuse and neglect impacts a significant number of elderly people across the world. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 25% of elderly adults are victims of abuse or neglect. Unfortunately, many of these incidents go unreported for a variety of reasons.

“Elder abuse is a serious issue that does not receive the attention it deserves,” says Gene Cullan, a Phoenix nursing home abuse attorney at the law firm of Cullan & Cullan, M.D., J.D. “Our law firm has witnessed the tragic consequences of nursing home abuse, and we are committed to protecting the rights of victims across Arizona. We are proud to participate in local Elder Abuse Awareness Day events on June 15, and we urge others in the area to join us.”

There are a variety of ways that individuals and organizations can get involved in raising awareness for elder abuse, including:

- Developing an educational program
- Wearing purple, the official color of elder abuse awareness, on June 15th
- Volunteering at a local nursing home on a regular basis, particularly with individuals who do not receive regular visits from family and friends
- Participating in activities which raise awareness of the issue in the local community
- Reaching out to an elderly friend, family member, or neighbor living alone on a regular basis
- Volunteering at a local chapter of Meals on Wheels to bring meals to the homes of seniors who may need assistance
- Becoming involved with the local elder abuse prevention coalition – you can find additional information at www.ncea.aoa.gov/ncearoot/main site/pdf/EffectiveLocalElderAbusePreventionNetworks.pdf
- Create an elder abuse awareness group on a social networking site such as Facebook, providing links to information and advocacy resources – start a campaign to get “x” number of friends to join the group by Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15th)

Participation in Elder Abuse Awareness Day is an important step to improving the living conditions for many elderly citizens across the world. While raising awareness for this cause should not be limited to one day, it is an important tool for the protection of elderly rights.

About Cullan & Cullan, M.D., J.D.

This year’s showhouse was located in Historic Huntsville and Townhouse Galleries’ team designed its parlor. Of his experience, Rick Treadway states “that exquisite interiors, furnishings and texture make this space dignified, while a warm and enticing color palette create a dramatic edge.” The designers’ selection of a rich buff wall color introduced a backdrop, perfect for the array of bold accent colors used in the space. Maintaining the elegant Victorian style of the home, Mr. Treadway and Mrs. Wills selected an eclectic mix of Old World reproductions, including furniture pieces from the Townhouse Galleries’ extensive collection. An assortment of contemporary and transitional accessories allowed the space to produce the “wow” factor expected when perusing the showhouse space. Townhouse Galleries’ owner, Judy Thomas says, “We love participating in the area showhouses. It gives our designers the opportunity to shine!”

Townhouse Galleries offers complimentary interior design services with purchase. According to Mrs. Thomas, “We want our clients to have access to the creativity and skills of our designers.

Datamonitor attended this year’s International Osteoporosis Foundation World Congress on Osteoporosis and 10th European Congress on Clinical and Economical Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis, the most important meeting on the osteoporosis calendar. A number of major pharmaceutical firms had a presence at the meeting, indicating the significance of this market.

Pfizer: remains a small presence in the osteoporosis market

The presence of Pfizer at the congress suggests that the company intends to launch Conbriza (bazedoxifene) in the European market after it was approved in 2009. It is Datamonitor’s understanding that the company is negotiating price and reimbursement issues prior to launching the drug, possibly by the end of the year. On the other hand, Pfizer’s other drug Fablyn (lasofoxifene) was not mentioned at the congress, reinforcing Datamonitor’s opinion that Pfizer itself will never launch the drug.

Conbriza – also known as Viviant in the US – is a novel once-daily oral selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) developed by Pfizer for the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis. Conbriza was approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) in April 2009, but has not yet launched and is currently being reviewed by the FDA for the same indication. Conbriza was also filed in Japan in 2007.

There have been several safety and efficacy issued with the use of SERMs for osteoporosis which have resulted in the recent decrease in sales of the only drug in this class on the market, Eli Lilly’s Evista (raloxifene). Pfizer made an effort to improve the clinical attractiveness of its drug at the congress by presenting several posters analyzing gynecological, cardiovascular and breast safety after five years of treatment. However, it remains unclear if this will be sufficient to convince the FDA regarding Conbriza’s safety. Pfizer also presented a two-year extension to the three-year pivotal trial for bazedoxifene. Importantly, the study showed efficacy of bazedoxifene in preventing non-vertebral fractures in women with severe osteoporosis. However, In Datamonitor’s opinion these data were not very solid and Conbriza’s efficacy in preventing non-vertebral fracture among all women in the trial was statistically insignificant. As new therapies reach the market, Datamonitor believes that physicians remain skeptical of the use of these drugs for the treatment of osteoporosis.

Sanofi-Aventis/Warner Chilcott: alliance for better bone health presents GLOW results

Sanofi-Aventis has been marketing the leading brand Actonel (risedronate) in the US since its launch a decade ago. At the congress, alongside its new partner Warner Chilcott, the French pharmaceutical giant provided data from the GLOW study (Global Longitudinal Study of Osteoporosis in Women). GLOW is a prospective study involving over 60,000 women in the US, Canada, Europe and Australia. Group analysis showed that in Northern Europe only 13% of women involved were using anti-osteoporosis medications, while in the US and Canada up to 32% of women were treated. The percentage of diagnosed and treated women was also the lowest in Europe (45-52%) compared to the other regions (62-65%). The study also showed that women in the US were three times more likely to be treated than women in Southern Europe.

Out of the 5,321 women in GLOW who were taking osteoporosis drugs at baseline, 19% had stopped after the first year. The most common reason was due to doctor’s advice (37%) or side effects or long-term risk concerns (37%). No particular differences were seen in the discontinuation patterns and reasons among women who were taking bisphosphonates or non-bisphosphonate drugs. Datamonitor believes that this is a very interesting study which will allow researchers to better understand the behavior of women in taking the osteoporosis medications.

GlaxoSmithKline: displays continued interest in the osteoporosis market

GlaxoSmithKline’s presence at the conference demonstrated its continued commitment to osteoporosis. Together with its partners Amgen and Roche, it hosted key lunch symposia on denosumab and Bonviva. The company also presented data regarding its calcilytic compound ronacaleret, which recently failed Phase II trails.

Investigation of ronacaleret was terminated after Phase II trials failed to show efficacy of the compound in increasing bone mineral density (BMD). The calcium-sensing receptor in parathyroid cells regulates the secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH). By antagonizing the receptor it was thought that there would be an increase in PTH secretion and therefore an increase in BMD.

The Phase II data presented were from a dose finding study (100mg, 200mg, 300mg or 400mg) and included an active comparator (alendronate 70mg) and an open label teriparatide arm. It was seen that patients taking ronacaleret had experienced an increase in lumbar spine BMD but this was lower than what was seen in patients taking alendronate and teriparatide. The authors suggest that ronacaleret caused a mild sustained primary hyperparathyroidism and did not produce the anabolic effect that had been anticipated from preclinical trials.

Datamonitor notes that there are several other similar compounds in development for the treatment of osteoporosis. The negative data presented at the conference could suggest that there is a class issue with these novel compounds and therefore they may never reach the market. Nevertheless, experts at the congress are still very intrigued by the compounds and believe that others may be more efficacious in increasing BMD. As such, Datamonitor believes that calcilytic compounds remain attractive therapeutic targets for the time being.

This year on May 26, the world unites once more in the MS movement to highlight the international effects of multiple sclerosis (MS). Organized by the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation (MSIF) with the help of MS Societies in 62 countries, including the United States and Canada, the day will be marked by more than 200 events around the world in a concerted effort to build awareness for MS and enhance collaboration that will bring us closer to a world free of multiple sclerosis.

The focus of World MS Day is on the needs of people with multiple sclerosis, the economic impact of MS, and the urgent need for more research to eradicate the disease. It encourages people affected by MS worldwide to think globally and act locally coming together to take positive action in the MS movement by sharing experiences, by donating time and funds to both support MS programs that will help people with MS move forward with their lives and by spurring MS research to end the disease.

This year to bring home the importance of what an MS diagnosis can mean, which occurs hourly in the US, the MSIF initiated the first global survey covering 125 countries and examining the “Global Impact of Multiple Sclerosis.” Estimates among the 15 nations tracking such data, indicate that the average annual costs of MS to the person affected and society as a whole to be $41,335, and most currently in the US, $69,118. Based on an MS population in the U.S. of 400,000 that would mean the total yearly impact of MS in the United States is $28 billion. Loss of employment, or early retirement, was considered to be the single largest factor contributing to this financial cost.

http://www.msif.org/en/get_involved/world_ms_day_2010/economic_impact.html

http://www.msif.org/en/get_involved/world_ms_day_2010/survey_results.html

MS is found in every country in the world, and is one of the most common neurological diseases amongst people in their 20s and 30s. It is a prime of life disease striking just when people are building their careers and families. MS affects at least twice as many women as men and up to 60% of people diagnosed with MS will experience long-term disability. Though continuing medical breakthroughs have brought partially effective treatment to many people with MS, there is still no cure.

How to Get Involved in World MS Day

Think globally and act locally by:

“World MS Day is so important because it reinforces that MS is a global disease, which demands global awareness, a global movement and global action,” said Joyce Nelson, President and CEO of the U.S. National MS Society.

HIGHLIGHTS MARKING WORLD MS DAY

About the U.S. National Multiple Sclerosis Society

MS stops people from moving. The National MS Society exists to make sure it doesn’t. The Society addresses the challenges of each person affected by MS by funding cutting edge research, driving change through advocacy, facilitating professional education, collaborating with MS organizations around the world, and providing programs and services designed to help people with MS and their families move their lives forward. In 2009 alone, through our national office and 50 state network of chapters, we devoted over $132 million to programs that enhanced more than one million lives. To move us closer to a world free of MS, the Society also invested nearly $40 million to support 375 research projects around the world.
About Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system, interrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. Every hour in the United States, someone is newly diagnosed with MS. Symptoms range from reduced or lost mobility to numbness and tingling to blindness and paralysis. The progress, severity and specific symptoms of MS in any one person cannot yet be predicted, but advances in research and treatment are moving us closer to a world free of MS. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50, with at least two to three times more women than men being diagnosed with the disease. MS affects more than 400,000 people in the U.S., and 2.1 million worldwide.
