Apple pledges to go green to the core

In response to criticism from the environmental lobbying, Apple has announced future plans to gradually eliminate toxic substances from its manufacturing components and processes.

Visitors to Apple’s site will find the new ‘A Greener Apple’ logo on the main page.

Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, said: “We tend to talk about the things we have just accomplished but that this policy didn’t work with green issues and left both shareholders and customers in the dark. Today we’re changing our policy.â€Â

He remarked that Apple was the first in the industry to eliminate the use of cathode ray tube (CRT) displays in 2006, which typically contain 3 lbs of lead.

Apple’s LCD displays contain less than 1 lb of lead, said Jobs, pointing the finger at Dell, Gateway, Hewlett Packard and Lenovo, which still ship CRT displays today.

Jobs said Apple was committed to implementing many environmentally friendly manufacturing methods by 2008. It plans to totally eliminate the use of arsenic in all of its displays by the end of 2008 and to eventually eliminate the use of mercury.
