Black Grape Flavonoids
Published February 1st, 2007
Grapes have been used as a food source for thousands of years; evidence has shown that they were cultivated as far back as 5000 BC in Asia. Grapes are now cultivated all over the world, France, Italy, Spain, the USA, Chile and Mexico being the largest producers. Grapes are round berries that grow on grapes vines, they can be eaten fresh, dried or used to make wine. Grapes can vary in taste and texture depending on variety; they also vary in colour from green, amber, red to blue-black and purple.
Grapes are packed with nutrients which can benefit health. Grapes contain flavonoids; two important flavonoids contained in grapes are querciti and resveratrol which can reduce the risk of heart disease. Resveratrol can also protect against cancer, lower the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, slow down the aging process and can ease the symptoms of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Grapes also contain the powerful antioxidant pterostilbene which can help to lower cholesterol and protect against forms of cancer such as lung, breast, prostrate and liver cancer.
