Peter Jackson’s remake of King Kong topped the North American box office over Christmas, just beating Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
A surge in ticket sales on Christmas Day saw it take $31.4m (£18.1m) between Friday and Boxing Day.
The Chronicles of Narnia was hot on its heels, taking $30.1m (£17.3m).
Jim Carrey comedy Fun With Dick and Jane was third in a weekend where cinema takings soared, with Christmas receipts 20% higher than 2004’s.
Fun With Dick and Jane, which also stars Tea Leoni, took $23.5m (£13.5m). It is a remake of a 1977 film which saw George Segal and Jane Fonda play a married couple who turn to crime to pay the bills.
But it was King Kong and Narnia which dominated the traditionally busy Christmas weekend.
